In It Together: A Class for Couples Coping with Depression

Tuesday, March 26, 2013 • 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Tuesday, April 2, 2013 • 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

$250 per Couple

It can be difficult to know how to respond to an intimate partner who is moving through a painful depressive episode. In it Together is an evening class that meets for two class sessions. We focus on: understanding how depression impacts communication, relating, intimacy, and behavior; setting boundaries; and practical skills for managing stress.

This class aims to equip the non-depressed partner with information and skills to be an important resource for their loved one while maintaining balance for themselves. It equips the partner living with low moods with tools to respond to depressive episodes more optimally, and teaches both partners skills for mindfully communicating needs. Couples also learn how depression disrupts communication and intimacy and work on creating a personal plan for lowering the negative impact of those disruptions.

An hour before class starts, we make a simple & casual supper of vegetable soup available to students. Coffee, tea, natural beverages, local mountain spring water, and fresh fruit are also provided.

The content of this class is based on recent and reliable information about the physical, psychological, social and ecological, and existential impact of living with low moods. The focus is on information and practical skills that students can immediately apply to their lives, including: mindfulness-based approaches to stress reduction, authoring a personal wellness plan, how to choose the right kind of psychological support, and how to get the most out of psychotherapy. Class size is limited, allowing for a great deal of personal attention and participation.

Depression and Spirit: A Workshop for People of Faith

Wednesday, April 10, 2013 • 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm • Donation

For people of faith, chronic depression is not only psychologically and emotionally challenging, but spiritually trying as well. This class puts depression in an existential, spiritual, and transpersonal context. We acknowledge these dimensions of the depressive experience and explore options for integrating them into an overall approach for managing life with recurrent low moods. We explore the use of spiritual companionship or guidance as an adjunct or alternative to traditional therapy, and examine the impact of an array of spiritual practices on stress and depression management.

While we put life with low moods into this special context, it is not at the expense of understanding depression as an experience that has physical, psychological, and social dimensions that may need tending to achieve balance and health.

This workshop is taught by a lay Buddhist and is open to people of all faiths and spiritual traditions.

An hour before class starts, we make a simple & casual supper of vegetable soup available to students. Coffee, tea, natural beverages, local mountain spring water, and fresh fruit are also provided.

Gratitude: A Re-Boot Camp

Friday, June 7- Sunday, June 9 • Quaker Center • $425

Gratitude is a powerful intervention for people living with low moods. This weekend is designed to give retreatants the space, time, and structure to explore how gratitude, forgiveness, and acts of radical self-care can have a positive impact on their day-to-day lived experiences.

The setting is beautiful, the accommodations simple, and the food is basic, local, and heavily organic.

We begin with a shared meal on Friday evening, followed by an introduction to the practice of radical gratitude. Participants spend Saturday morning and early afternoon engaged in practices and learning experiences designed to help them express and explore what it means to be grateful for everything, including emotional difficulty. Boundaries and the importance of self-care are emphasized throughout all the teachings offered during the retreat.

Retreat participants will have the opportunity to spend an extended period of time engaged in supported solitude in a natural setting on private property (close to Quaker Center - transportation is provided), followed by a camp fire and ceremony.

Ben Lomond Quaker Center is a self-serve retreat. The cost above covers teaching, shared accommodations or tent camping, 6 meals, and healthy snacks.

Formal registration for this class opens April 7, 2013.
